I could read the sports page aloud at age 2. Read through all 22 volumes of the World Book Encyclopedia by age 4. All because of something my mother did. Something simple, but that many mothers nowadays don't have time to do.
Beginning in the 60's, reading curriculum became way too complicated ... in both public and private schools. Just watch or skim the transcripts of "Sold a Story." You'll learn why an astounding number of 4th graders can't read their textbooks. That's from all economic backgrounds, in all English-speaking countries ... as much as 50% in the US. That reading tutors now earn $100+ per hour from families who can afford to pay them. That recently some US school districts began requiring math and science teachers to teach reading. Which likely takes away time from science and math.
It's a situation that makes me want to help time-strapped parents in affordable ways.
