Tipalti Mass Payments and MassPay are two popular options for platforms seeking an easy way to pay out users, creators, and sellers globally with as little friction as possible.

But they're not the same – each provider has its own set of strengths and limitations, and the fee structure differs too.

This review compares Tipalti's Mass Payments product with MassPay head to head, so that you can weigh up each option without doing any digging or guesswork.

## Tipalti vs MassPay at a glance

Before we get into the full review, let's take a brief look at both Tipalti and MassPay.

You can see already that both providers differ in what they're offering, which might already give you an idea of which would be best for your platform.

But let's dig a little deeper.

## What is Tipalti?

Tipalti is best known as an AP (Accounts Payable) automation platform, but they also offer a product specifically for payouts at scale, [Tipalti Mass Payments](https://whop.com/blog/tipalti-alternatives/).

It's aimed at platforms that need to send [cross-border payments](https://whop.com/blog/cross-border-payments/) to recipients across the globe, covering 200+ countries and territories, and offering payouts in 120+ currencies. Tipalti offers payees a choice of 50+ payment methods – though most are bank-based.

![Video thumbnail](https://storage.ghost.io/c/12/7b/127b828b-bdc2-4972-9cf2-de857df9c324/content/media/2026/08/Tipalti_thumb.jpg)
[Watch video](https://storage.ghost.io/c/12/7b/127b828b-bdc2-4972-9cf2-de857df9c324/content/media/2026/08/Tipalti.mp4)

Inside those companies, Tipalti is a finance-team tool. It integrates with NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, and Sage Intacct, and comes with the approval workflows and reconciliation your finance department expects.

[**Tax compliance**](https://whop.com/blog/tax-compliance/)** is where Tipalti leads**: W-9/W-8 collection, VAT and DAC7 reporting, all run through a KPMG-approved tax engine, with real-time sanctions screening built in.

Payees self-onboard through a branded portal, choosing their [payment method](https://whop.com/blog/payment-methods-for-freelancers/), submitting tax forms digitally, and tracking their own payouts.

All in all, Tipalti Mass Payments is best for companies where finance owns payouts and tight tax compliance is non-negotiable.

## What is MassPay?

[MassPay](https://whop.com/blog/masspay-alternatives/), on the other hand, is a mass payout platform that offers one integration to handle global payouts, compliance, rails, FX, and payee support.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/12/7b/127b828b-bdc2-4972-9cf2-de857df9c324/content/images/2026/08/MassPay--1-.png)

Platforms can send money to 180 countries, using local payment rails, stablecoins, mobile wallets, and real-time payout methods. Their website lists 80+ currencies, though the developer docs state 70+ (so it's worth checking with sales if you end up setting up a call).

Its compliance is pretty solid, too: the platform monitors compliance signals across payees, transactions, rails, and different jurisdictions. Within the payout experience, KYC, AML, sanctions screening, and velocity checks run on autopilot. Tax form collection (W-9/W-8, 1099s) is handled via the API too, but without Tipalti's VAT and DAC7 coverage.

It's a fully customized product, so platforms all get different solutions tailored to their needs – at prices MassPay determines.

[Payment orchestration](https://whop.com/blog/payment-orchestration/) is included, with MassPay using smart routing to send payouts through the best available path to the recipient. This can reduce failures, but costs vary by route – and with no published pricing they're harder to predict.

Payees manage their own payouts, preferences, and balances, all displayed in their own language within a fully white-labelled portal.

MassPay is best for larger platforms paying into markets where bank transfers aren't enough, with both the engineering resources to integrate a payout API, and the volume to justify a custom-quoted contract.

## Tipalti vs MassPay: fees and pricing compared

Comparing Tipalti and MassPay's fees is a little tricky, because Tipalti only publishes their monthly platform fee, and MassPay is fully customized during onboarding via sales.

<table>

    <tr>
      <th></th>
      <th>Tipalti Mass Payments</th>
      <th>MassPay</th>

  <tbody>
    <tr>

      <td>From $249/mo</td>
      <td>Custom quote only</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>

      <td>Yes — rates not published</td>
      <td>Not published</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td><strong>FX/cross-border fees</strong></td>
      <td>Varies by method and destination</td>
      <td>Not published</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td><strong>Failed transaction</strong></td>
      <td>Not disclosed</td>
      <td>Free (their claim)</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td><strong>Setup fees</strong></td>
      <td>May require paid professional services</td>
      <td>Not disclosed</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td><strong>Contract</strong></td>
      <td>Custom quotes, sales-led</td>
      <td>"One contract, no lock-in" (their claim)</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td><strong>Self-serve signup</strong></td>
      <td>No</td>
      <td>No</td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

So let’s look at the information that’s actually available.

Tipalti gives you a floor: Mass Payments starts at $249/month for the platform, with per-payment transaction fees on top.

Those per-payment rates aren't published – they depend on the payment method and destination country, and so do the FX fees when you're paying out cross-border.

The total value of cross-border payments is predicted to reach $290.2 trillion by 2030 (Statista).

Watch for implementation costs, too. Tipalti's own pricing page claims that while standard implementations are included and cover common AP and payment workflows, "More complex environments may require additional professional services".

So Tipalti's $249/month is where costs *begin*, not where they end. The fees that scale with your payout volume (per-payment and FX) are exactly the ones you can't see until you're talking to sales.

Meanwhile, MassPay doesn't give you a floor at all. There's no pricing page, and every platform gets a custom-quoted contract.

But here’s what they do advertise: no fees on failed transactions and one contract with no lock-in.

Both are worth confirming in writing, but you won't know your per-payout cost, FX markup, or any minimums until you've been through their consultant process.

If you do go through that process, make sure you get clarity on the fees that matter most: per-payment fees for your top payout corridors, FX markup over mid-market rate, monthly minimums, and what happens to pricing when your volume grows.

## Features compared

Comparing the features of Tipalti Mass Payments and MassPay is a lot easier than comparing fees, because unlike costs, the features for both are clearly laid out.

  </tbody>
</table>

The above table gives you a pretty good idea of where each platform shines. Tipalti's Mass Payments is probably the stronger option if finance runs payouts and compliance is important. MassPay might make more sense if payouts are part of your product, and you need payment flexibility.

### Payout methods

Tipalti offers 50+ payout methods, but most are different ways of sending money through traditional banking rails (ACH, SEPA, BACS, wire transfers) – and then you also get access to PayPal and paper checks. If most of your payees have bank accounts and want to be paid in their local currency, that's probably enough.

MassPay doesn't publish a method count, but it covers more types of payments (mobile wallets, cash pickup, and stablecoins). That matters if you're paying gig workers, sellers, or contractors in markets where a bank transfer isn't always the most accessible option.

### Tax and compliance

Both Tipalti and MassPay can collect W-9 and W-8 forms, and both support 1099 reporting.

However, Tipalti goes further, with VAT, DAC7, and SIN/BN reporting. Its tax engine has also been reviewed and approved by KPMG (a major global accounting firm), which gives finance teams extra assurance that its tax processes meet established compliance standards.

For a finance team managing payees across multiple countries, that can mean fewer tax and compliance processes to manage separately.

Globally, fintechs and banks spend an estimated $206 billion per year on financial crime compliance (Bank Policy Institute).

### Integrations

When it comes to integrations, both platforms have a REST API and sandbox, but MassPay has more tools for building payouts directly into their own experience. It offers SDKs in four languages, documented webhooks, and KYC that can be embedded into your flow using providers such as Persona and SumSub. That gives developers more control over what the payout experience looks and feels like to users.

Tipalti is much more geared toward the *finance stack.* It has pre-built integrations with NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, and Sage Intacct, plus an iFrame for embedding payee onboarding. So if your priority is getting payout data into your accounting system without building and maintaining those connections yourself, Tipalti has the advantage.

Features only tell you what each platform can do, though. It's the limitations where you find out what it's like to actually use them.

## Limitations of each platform

Neither Tipalti Mass Payments or MassPay comes without trade-offs – and some of their strengths could actually be limitations if they aren't what your platform needs.

### Tipalti Mass Payments limitations

Tipalti's biggest drawbacks tend to do with its pricing, onboarding, and limited flexibility. As mentioned earlier, $249/month is simply the platform cost, before transaction fees are factored in (and with FX fees unpublished). There's no self-serve sign up either, so you have to go through sales to get a custom quote before you know the real costs of sending payouts.

Its payout methods are also less wide than MassPay's. Tipalti covers plenty of bank rails (plus PayPal and checks), but doesn't offer the same breadth of mobile wallets, cash pickup, and stablecoins as MassPay. Those can matter when you're paying users in global markets where bank accounts aren't the payee's default.

Tipalti has an API and sandbox for testing, but no official SDKs. Its payment notifications use an IPN-style system rather than MassPay's documented webhooks.

### MassPay limitations

MassPay's main downside is that it's simply a payout product. Its tax coverage is also narrower than Tipalti's. You'll get core US tax functionality, but the broader VAT and DAC7 support Tipalti offers isn't there. MassPay's public documentation around sanctions screening is also less explicit.

And while MassPay advertises broad global coverage, it's still smaller than Tipalti's. Its own materials also give different figures for supported currencies, so platforms will need to confirm coverage with sales before committing.

### Shared limitations

And then there are the shared limitations of **both providers,** with the biggest being how difficult it is to know what you'll *actually* pay before talking to sales.

Tipalti at least gives you a $249/month starting point, while MassPay publishes no pricing at all. But in both cases, the costs that tend to matter most as you scale (like per-payout fees and FX) require a quote.

They're also both sales-led rather than self-serve. You can't simply create an account, see exactly what each payout will cost, and start paying people immediately.

For larger businesses that expect procurement, negotiated contracts, and a managed implementation, that may not be a problem.

But for a platform that wants to get global payouts running quickly and predictably, it's a meaningful barrier.

## Tipalti vs MassPay: which should you choose?

The key focus when weighing up between Tipalti and MassPay should be less about which platform has the longest feature list, and more about where payouts sit in your business.

If your finance team owns the process and tax, compliance, reconciliation, and accounting integrations are the priority, Tipalti is likely the better fit. If payouts are something customers or workers interact with inside your product (and you want to give them more choice over how they receive their money) MassPay may be the better choice.

## Tipalti vs MassPay FAQs

### How much does Tipalti Mass Payments cost?

Tipalti Mass Payments starts at $249/month, which includes unlimited users, a payee portal, and core automation features. Per-payment transaction fees apply on top, and FX fees vary by payment method and destination (neither are published).

### How much does MassPay cost?

MassPay doesn't publish any pricing. Every platform receives a custom-quoted contract after a consultant meeting and business verification (KYB) process. MassPay advertises no fees on failed transactions and a single contract with no lock-in.

### What's the difference between Tipalti and MassPay?

Both send mass payouts globally, but they're built for different buyers. Tipalti is aimed toward finance teams, with deep tax compliance (VAT, DAC7, a KPMG-approved tax engine) and ERP integrations. MassPay is built for embedding payouts into your product, with more payout types, like mobile wallets, cash pickup, and stablecoins. It also has stronger developer features.

It depends on what your platform needs alongside payouts. MassPay is built to embed in your product, with SDKs, webhooks, white-labeled payee onboarding, and payout methods like mobile wallets and cash pickup. Tipalti is the better fit when finance owns payouts and needs tax compliance depth (VAT, DAC7) and ERP integrations. Both require a sales process to get started.
