The Rapture of the Church: A 1500-Word Description With Scripture
The rapture of the church is one of the most talked-about prophetic events in Christian teaching, especially within evangelical and Pentecostal traditions. Though the word “rapture” itself does not appear in most English Bibles, the concept comes directly from Scripture. The term is taken from the Latin rapturo, meaning “caught up,” which translates the Greek word harpazō—a forceful taking away. This idea of being suddenly “caught up” to meet Jesus in the air forms the foundation of the rapture as Christians describe it.
The Biblical Foundation for the Rapture
The most explicit passage describing the rapture is 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17:
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”
This is the clearest depiction of the moment believers are taken up to meet Christ. Paul presents it not as a symbolic event, but as a literal, future moment in which both living and resurrected believers will be gathered together by Christ Himself.
