Large Halloween yard STLs warp because of the first 5mm, not the whole print

If your jack-o-lantern looks fine at 20% and banana-peels at 100%, it's almost never the model.

On a cheap FDM machine, a 250mm yard prop fails in the first five millimeters:

  • Bed not actually hot. 60°C on the screen, 48°C at the corners. Check with a cheap IR thermometer, not the printer's word.

  • No brim on a tall, skinny haunt piece. 8–12mm brim. Knock it off after it cools, not while it's hot.

  • Cooling fan at 100% from layer 2. For PLA yard props I keep it at 40% until layer 8, then ramp.

  • Scaling a file designed at 200mm up to 400mm without adding walls. 3 perimeters minimum once you go over 200mm.

I design HauntPrint files around that — already oriented, already with a footprint that holds on a $200 bed. If the machine still fights you, book a 1-hour session. One hour. Not forever.

What's the last Halloween print that lifted on you?
