I'm 38. Started calisthenics from zero last year — no gym, no equipment, just a pull-up bar and a decision.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about bodyweight training when you're not 22 anymore: the hard part isn't the exercises, it's the first 10 days. Your joints complain, your ego takes a hit watching 19-year-olds do muscle-ups, and it's tempting to quit before your body adapts.

What actually worked for me:

  • Progress regressions, not full reps. Negatives and holds build the tendon strength full reps need — skip this and you'll plateau or get hurt.

  • Track attendance, not PRs, for the first 30 days. Showing up 30/30 days matters more than any single rep count.

  • Pair every push movement with a pull movement. Most self-taught guys overdo push-ups and end up with shoulder imbalances.

I built a 30-Day Calisthenics Challenge around exactly this — daily structured sessions, form checks, and a community to keep you accountable when motivation dips (it will, around day 9-12 for almost everyone).

If you're starting later in life and tired of programs built for people half your age, happy to answer questions here.
