5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting A&P School

Aviation maintenance is one of the most underrated career paths in the U.S. right now. Airlines are desperate for A&P mechanics, starting salaries are $60-80K+ depending on location, and the demand isn't slowing down.

But A&P school is no joke. Here are 5 things that would have saved me a lot of stress:

1. The FAA writtens are memorization-heavy, not conceptual. Don't just "understand" the material — drill the question banks. The ASA and Prepware apps are your best friends.

2. Your oral exam matters more than you think. The DME will ask you to explain procedures out loud. Practice talking through maintenance tasks, not just reading about them.

3. Hands-on time is where you actually learn. Volunteer for every lab session. The students who rush through practicals are the ones who struggle on the O&Ps.

4. Networking starts in school. Your classmates will be working at airlines, MROs, and corporate flight departments. Build those relationships now.

5. Don't wait until graduation to job hunt. Start applying 2-3 months before you finish. Airlines like United, Delta, and American have pipeline programs specifically for new A&Ps.
