The 5 Accounting Concepts That Trip Up Every College Student (And How to Fix Them)

I've tutored hundreds of accounting students. These are the 5 topics where almost everyone gets stuck:

1. Debits & Credits — Stop memorizing rules. Think of it as: assets and expenses increase on the left, liabilities and revenue on the right. That's it.

2. Adjusting Entries — Most students forget that accrual accounting means recognizing revenue when earned, not when cash hits your bank. Practice matching expenses to the period they belong to.

3. The Accounting Equation — Assets = Liabilities + Equity. Every single transaction must keep this balanced. If your trial balance is off, work backwards from here.

4. Cash Flow Statements — The indirect method confuses everyone. Start with net income, then adjust for non-cash items. Depreciation gets added back because it's not real cash going out.

5. Closing Entries — Revenue and expense accounts reset to zero at year-end. The net goes to Retained Earnings. Think of it like clearing your semester GPA for a fresh start.

If any of these sound familiar, I built a full course that walks through each one with practice problems and real examples. No fluff, just the stuff that actually shows up on exams.
