The 3 Mistakes Working Professionals Make With Academic Papers

After years of writing academic papers for busy professionals, I've noticed the same three mistakes over and over.

1. Starting with the introduction

Your intro should be the LAST thing you write. Start with your thesis, build your argument in the body, then come back and write an intro that actually matches what you said. Most people write a vague intro first and then struggle to make the paper fit.

2. Ignoring the rubric

Professors grade against specific criteria. If the rubric says "demonstrate critical analysis," you need to argue and evaluate — not just summarize. Read the rubric before you write a single word.

3. Citing too late in the process

Trying to add references after you've already written the paper is painful. Keep a running reference list from the start. Every time you make a claim, find the source immediately.

These seem obvious, but when you're working 50+ hours a week and studying part-time, shortcuts happen.

If you're a working professional pursuing your degree and need someone who gets it — that's exactly who I built AcePen Writing for. Professional academic writing so you can focus on your career while still hitting your academic goals.
