What most people get wrong about sourcing building materials in the Gulf
I grew up around a building materials trading counter in Riyadh, and the number one mistake I still see contractors make is buying tools and consumables based on price-per-unit instead of cost-per-job.
A cheap diamond blade that dies after 40 cuts costs more than a Hilti or Tyrolit blade that lasts 400 — but the invoice doesn't show that. Same story with adhesives: an unbranded tile adhesive that fails a moisture test on a bathroom job costs you the callback, the reputation, and the material twice over. Sika, MAPEI, and Henkel exist because they've solved that failure mode at scale, and it shows in repeat commercial work.
The other thing nobody tells new contractors: your abrasives and consumables spend (discs, belts, blades) usually outpaces your power tool spend over a year, because tools last and consumables don't. If you're not buying those in bulk from a trade account, you're leaving margin on the table every single week.
We started Al-Bina Trading Est. to bring proper wholesale access — real European and international brands, real bulk pricing — to contractors here instead of forcing everyone through retail markups. Happy to talk shop with anyone sourcing for a live project.
