The $39/month test that tells you if a lead is worth chasing

Most freelancers waste hours qualifying leads by gut feel. Here's the 3-question filter I use before spending a single minute on outreach:

1. Do they have a visible, recent trigger? A new hire, a funding round, a website redesign, a job posting for a role your service replaces. No trigger = no urgency = they'll ghost you for weeks.

2. Can they actually pay? Company size and industry are proxies, but the real signal is: are they already spending money on the problem you solve (an agency, a tool, a freelancer)? If yes, they have a budget line for it. If they've never paid anyone for this, you're about to become their first — expect a longer, harder sale.

3. Is the decision-maker reachable in 1-2 steps? If you need to go through 4 layers to reach whoever signs off, deprioritize. Speed to decision-maker is one of the biggest predictors of close speed.

Score each lead 0-3. Anything under 2 goes in a "maybe later" pile, not your active pipeline. Most people chase every lead equally and wonder why their close rate is garbage — it's not a skills problem, it's a triage problem.

I build this filtering into the weekly leads I put together for freelance marketers/consultants over at Agency Lead — happy to share the checklist template if anyone wants it, just ask below.

The lead problem nobody talks about when you go freelance

Spent the last while talking to freelance marketers about why they plateau at $3-5k/mo instead of scaling past it. It's almost never a skills problem. It's a pipeline problem.

Here's the pattern I keep seeing:

  1. Feast or famine outreach. They only prospect when a client churns or a project ends. By the time they start looking, they've already got a 2-4 week income gap.

  1. Wrong-fit leads. Cold DMing random businesses with no signal they actually need marketing help right now. Low reply rate, lower close rate.

  1. No system, just hustle. Manually scouring job boards and IG comments every week instead of having a repeatable source of qualified prospects.

The fix that actually works: treat lead flow like a subscription, not a sprint. Set aside time weekly (not just when you're desperate) to work a consistent stream of leads that are already showing buying signals — hiring posts, funding news, website redesigns, complaints about their current agency.

If you're freelancing and want that pipeline handed to you instead of building it yourself, I put together a weekly newsletter that does exactly this — qualified agency-style leads for solo marketers/consultants. Link in my profile if you want to check it out.

Either way — fix the feast/famine cycle before you try to raise your rates. Consistent pipeline is what actually lets you say no to bad-fit clients.
