How our data model identifies mispriced NFL rushing props

Most NFL rushing props are priced off last week's box score, a name-brand running back, and a round number the sportsbook wants to hang. That is why so many of them are wrong.

Our model does not start with the player. It starts with the game script, then works down to the snap, then to the carry, then to the yard.

1. Game script comes first

Rushing volume is not a talent stat. It is a clock-management stat. If the implied total and spread say a team should be leading in the fourth quarter, that back's carry count goes up even if the defense is stout. If the same team is a road underdog in a high-total game, the "lead back" often finishes with 12 carries and a receiving spike. Books still post last year's rushing line. We reprice the volume first.

2. Opportunity is not the same as usage

A 65% snap share can hide a 40% rush-down snap share. We split snaps into obvious-run, obvious-pass, and neutral, then apply each back's historical carry rate in those buckets. Goal-line and two-minute packages get their own weights. If a committee back only vultures inside the 5, that is not a rushing-yards prop, it is a touchdown prop wearing a yards costume.

3. Yards per carry is a matchup, not a résumé

We do not use season YPC. We use expected yards based on:

  • Defensive front width and light-box rate

  • Stacked-box rate against this offensive line

  • Explosive-run rate (10+ yards) allowed vs. generated

  • Play-action rate, which changes how the second level sits

A 4.8 YPC back facing a defense that lives in light boxes is not the same player as that same back against a loaded box on early downs. The number on the board usually treats them as the same player.

4. Where the misprice actually lives

The typical error is 8 to 18 rushing yards, enough to flip a prop but not enough for a casual board to notice. Common sources:

  • A backup who inherited 18 carries in Week 3 because of a blowout, now priced as if that is his median

  • A starter whose team just shifted to 12 personnel, which quietly adds 1.5 expected carries

  • A defense that just lost a two-down linebacker, which the market has not moved yet

  • Weather and turf that crush explosive runs more than they crush volume

5. How we grade ourselves

Every card is logged against closing number, not against the open. We track hit rate, average edge at close, and calibration (did 58% plays actually hit near 58%). If a split of the model is not calibrated, it does not make the weekly card. Accuracy is not a screenshot of one Sunday. It is a ledger.

That is where the numbers for this week go up. This post is the why. The product is the card.

Sunday football is in the books. Here’s the honest breakdown, wins and misses.

Results: 3 tickets hit ✅✅✅ | 1 ticket missed ❌

The miss came down to one leg. Geno Smith finished with 39 passing yards in the 1st quarter and we needed 40+. One yard. That’s the kind of variance that comes with prop betting, and we’re not going to hide from it or dress it up.

Why we’re not shaking anything up:

• The process was sound. The read on Geno was right, and the number sat one yard from cashing.

• Every pick was posted in the Discord before kickoff, so everyone can check the receipts.

• 3 of 4 tickets hit. We judge the week by the full slate, not one leg.

13/16. 81% yesterday.

MLB props did the work. 10 hit props cashed clean, and Nico Hoerner went off for 4 hits; that'll do it. Joc Pederson added 2, and the rest of the slate held up tight.

Standouts worth noting:

🟢 Nico Hoerner — 4 hits (O0.5 ✅)

🟢 Joc Pederson — 2 hits (O0.5 ✅)

🟢 Trea Turner, JT Realmuto, Michael Harris II — all cashed

Three misses. Abrams went 0 total bases, Moreno and Busch both went hitless. It happens. 13/16 is still 13/16.
