Why most new coaches waste their first $1,000 in ad spend

I've spent the last few years building funnels for coaches, and there's a pattern I see constantly: someone hits their first $2-5k/month coaching and decides it's time to "run ads." They dump $1,000 into Facebook or Instagram with zero structure, get a handful of low-quality leads, and conclude "ads don't work for coaches."

Ads didn't fail them. The sequence did.

Here's what's actually happening in almost every case:

They're sending cold traffic straight to a booking link. No warm-up, no filter, no reason for a stranger to trust them with money yet. A booking link is the last step of a funnel, not the first.

They don't have an offer that's legible in 3 seconds. If someone can't tell what result you get them and for whom, in the time it takes to scroll past, you're paying to be ignored.

They have no lead capture. Every dollar spent on traffic that doesn't opt in anywhere is a dollar spent once. No retargeting, no email list, no way to recover the 97% who don't book immediately.

The fix isn't more budget — it's structure. A free resource or workshop that qualifies interest, a short-form value sequence that builds trust, and then the booking or sales call ask. That's the whole game. Most new coaches skip straight to the ask because it feels faster. It's not — it's just more expensive.

If you're in the $0-10k/month range and about to run your first ads, build the sequence before you build the ad. It's the difference between ads that compound and ads that just burn cash.

Happy to break down funnel structure for anyone working through this right now.
