3 Price Action Patterns That Actually Work With Algorithmic Confirmation
Most traders either go pure discretionary or pure algo. The edge is in combining both.
After 5+ years building trading algorithms, here are 3 price action setups that become significantly more reliable when you add algorithmic confirmation — and how to think about coding them.
---
1. The Liquidity Sweep + Volume Divergence
The Setup: Price takes out a key swing high/low (stops get hit), but volume on the sweep candle is lower than the previous impulse move.
Why it works: The sweep happened on weak participation. Smart money grabbed liquidity but isn't committing — reversal is likely.
Algo Confirmation: Code a script that flags when:
Price breaks a swing high/low by X pips
Volume on the breakout candle is < 70% of the 20-period average volume
RSI divergence is present on the same timeframe
This alone filters out ~60% of false breakouts in backtesting.
---
2. The Opening Range Break + ATR Filter
The Setup: Mark the first 30-minute range of the session. Trade the breakout — but only if the range is compressed.
Why it works: Tight opening ranges signal coiling energy. Wide ranges mean the move already happened.
Algo Confirmation: Only take the breakout if:
The 30-min opening range is < 50% of the 14-period daily ATR
The breakout candle closes with > 60% body (not a wick-heavy doji)
No major news events within the next 30 minutes
This is one of the highest win-rate setups for futures traders when coded correctly.
---
3. The Multi-Timeframe EMA Compression
The Setup: When the 8, 21, and 50 EMAs compress within a tight band (< 0.3% spread), an explosive move is coming. Trade the direction of the first clean break.
Why it works: EMA compression = market indecision. When all three timeframes agree and then break, the follow-through is strong.
Algo Confirmation: Code alerts for:
EMA spread < 0.3% of price
ADX below 20 (confirming range)
Entry on the first candle that closes above/below all three EMAs with increasing volume

The Real Edge
None of these setups are magic. The edge comes from:
Consistency — an algorithm doesn't skip setups because it's tired or scared
Speed — by the time you manually check 5 filters, the entry is gone
Backtesting — you can validate every setup across thousands of trades before risking real capital
I build indicators and EAs that automate exactly these kinds of multi-factor confirmations for MT4, MT5, cAlgo, and NinjaTrader.
