5 sound design tricks that make TikToks blow up

I've been producing music for short-form content for a while now, and the sounds that go viral all have something in common. Here's what I've learned:

1. The hook is in the first 0.5 seconds. If your audio doesn't grab attention before someone scrolls, it's dead. Start with impact — a hard bass hit, a vocal chop, or a satisfying click.

2. 85-115 BPM is the sweet spot. This tempo range matches how people naturally move and speak. Too fast feels chaotic, too slow loses energy.

3. Layer your sounds. The best viral audios use 2-3 complementary textures. A punchy 808, a melodic synth, and a crisp hi-hat pattern is the formula.

4. Leave space for the creator. The sounds that get used the most have gaps where creators can talk, lip-sync, or add their own flavor. Don't fill every second.

5. Use tension and release. A quick build-up into a satisfying drop keeps viewers watching. Even in a 15-second clip, this structure works.
