The Amex MR transfer mistake that quietly costs people the most value
Quick one for anyone sitting on a pile of Amex Membership Rewards points: the biggest value leak I see isn't a bad transfer ratio — it's transferring too early or too late relative to a partner's award chart changes and transfer bonuses.
A few concrete rules that save real money:
Never transfer "just in case." MR points are worth more sitting in your Amex account than sitting in most airline programs, because airline miles devalue faster and expire on some programs. Only transfer once you have a specific award itinerary held or ready to book.
Transfer bonuses (typically 20-30%) show up several times a year for partners like Air Canada Aeroplan, ANA, and Virgin Atlantic. Waiting for a bonus on a 100k-point transfer is effectively 20-30k free points — that's a business class flight leg for free.
Check partner award space before you transfer, not after. Transfers are final and usually instant, but you can't undo them. Use a flight-search tool to confirm the seat exists at the partner first.
Watch for devaluations. Airline partners change award charts with little notice. Points sitting in MR are insulated from those changes; points sitting in an airline account are not.
If you want the full system — partner rankings for premium cabins, a step-by-step alert setup so you catch transfer bonuses automatically, and a troubleshooting playbook for stuck transfers — that's exactly what I built out in MR Transfer Lab. Happy to answer questions here either way.
