The Western Lowland Gorilla is one of two subspecies of the Western Gorilla, distinguished by their brownish-grey hair, smaller size, and prominent brow ridge. Adult males, often referred to as 'silverbacks' due to the distinctive patch of silver hair on their backs, can weigh over 200 kilograms and stand up to 1.8 meters tall. They inhabit the dense rainforests and lowland swamps of Central Africa, from Cameroon to the Republic of Congo.

A primary herbivore, the Western Lowland Gorilla primarily feeds on fruits, leaves, shoots, and insects. They are highly social, living in groups typically comprising one adult male, several adult females, and their offspring. Communication within the group involves a complex system of vocalizations, body language, and facial expressions.

Unfortunately, the Western Lowland Gorilla is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss from deforestation, poaching, and the Ebola virus. Continued conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the survival of this magnificent species.
