Why I stopped trusting MyAnimeList scores (and started tracking recency-weighted rankings instead)

Built AnimeVerse Weekly because I got tired of a specific problem: MAL/AniList scores are lifetime averages, so a show that peaked 6 years ago and coasted since ranks the same as one that's actually great right now. That's useless if you're trying to decide what to watch THIS season.

So the format we run is simple — every week:

  • Recency-weighted rankings (recent episodes count more than early-season filler)

  • A one-paragraph recap of what actually happened, no padding

  • A "hidden gem" pick that isn't getting talked about enough

Two things I noticed building this out: (1) rankings flip HARD after finales — shows that were mid all season sometimes stick the landing and jump 10+ spots, and (2) the "hidden gem" pick is consistently the most commented-on part, more than the top-10 list itself. People want discovery more than confirmation of what's already popular.

If you're watching this season and want the weekly breakdown without wading through score-bombing and lifetime-average noise, it's free, ad-free, and takes 2 minutes to read: whop.com/animeverse-weekly
