AEO isn't SEO. Here's what most people still don't get.
Most people treating Answer Engine Optimization like SEO in a new outfit are going to lose.
AEO isn't about keywords or backlinks. It's about how you structure information so that AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini — choose to surface YOU as the answer.
The mental shift is this: you're not optimizing for a search crawler. You're optimizing for a reasoning engine. That means:
1. Clarity over density
AI doesn't reward keyword repetition. It rewards clean, authoritative answers to specific questions. One clear answer beats ten diluted ones.
2. Structure signals trust
Headings, definitions, step sequences — these aren't just UX. They're how you teach an AI to index your thinking. Unstructured content is invisible content.
3. Your citation footprint is your moat
When other credible sources reference your content, AI systems are far more likely to pull from yours. That's not links for rankings — that's citations for recall.
4. The thinking has to actually be good
This is the one nobody says out loud. AEO surfaces expertise, not effort. If you're optimizing hollow content, you're wasting time. The guide has to be worth citing.
That's what I built the AEO Field Guide around — the frameworks behind how AI selects answers, and how to position your content, brand, and thinking to be the one it chooses.
The guide teaches the thinking. The engagement is the build.
