The 3 mistakes every beginner makes in the gym (and how to fix them)

I've been coaching beginners for years and the same patterns come up every single time. If you're new to lifting, read this before your next session.

Mistake #1: Too many exercises, not enough progression

Beginners don't need 15 exercises per session. You need 4-5 compound movements done well, with weight going up over time. Bench, squat, deadlift, overhead press, rows. That's it. Master those first.

Mistake #2: Ignoring recovery

You don't grow in the gym — you grow when you rest. If you're training 6 days a week as a beginner, you're leaving gains on the table. 3-4 days is the sweet spot. Sleep 7+ hours. Eat enough protein (0.7-1g per pound of bodyweight).

Mistake #3: Program hopping

Pick one program and run it for at least 8-12 weeks before switching. The best lifters in the world got there through consistency, not variety.

If you want structured programs, form checks, and a community of beginners who actually show up — that's exactly what we built Apex Fitness for.
