Why most new traders lose money in their first 90 days (and how to not be one of them)
I've watched hundreds of people open a trading account, get wrecked in the first few months, and quit. It's almost never a strategy problem — it's a sequencing problem. Here's the order people actually need to learn this stuff in, based on what separates the ones who stick around:
1. Market mechanics before charts. Most people jump straight to candlestick patterns without understanding how an order book actually fills, what moves liquidity, or why spreads widen during news. Patterns mean nothing if you don't understand what's producing them.
2. Risk management before strategy. Everyone wants the 'winning setup.' The traders who survive are the ones who decided their position size and stop-loss before they had a strategy. A mediocre strategy with strict risk rules beats a great strategy with none, every single time.
3. A trading journal before more screen time. You cannot improve what you don't measure. Every trade — win or lose — needs a reason logged. After 50 logged trades, patterns in your own behavior show up that no indicator will ever tell you.
4. Psychology is the actual skill. Once someone understands the market and has risk rules, the only thing left is discipline — not revenge trading after a loss, not moving your stop because you 'feel' it'll bounce back.
Built out a full 21-lesson program (Apex Trading Lab) that walks through exactly this sequence — from market fundamentals through to a live trade walkthrough. If you're early in your trading journey, get the order right before you get the strategy right.
