Nobody fails in sales because of their script. They fail because of who they believe they are.

Hot take after years around high performers and total beginners in sales: the gap between them is almost never tactical.

Give a 'bad closer' the exact words of a top closer and they will still find a way to sound unconvincing — because their tonality, pacing, and frame all leak the belief underneath: I'm not sure I deserve this sale.

A few things I've found actually move the needle, in order:

  1. Fix the identity before the script. If you see yourself as 'not a salesperson,' you will unconsciously self-sabotage regardless of what words you're holding. Identity work isn't fluffy — it's upstream of every tactic.

  2. Frame control beats persuasion tricks. Whoever the prospect perceives as needing the deal more loses leverage instantly. Speak in statements, not permission-seeking questions, and don't chase when they pull away.

  3. Objections are diagnostic, not a wall. Label it, isolate it, then resolve the ACTUAL isolated concern — most people just pitch harder instead of diagnosing what's really being objected to.

  4. Tonality is read before your words are processed. Slow down, use silence after key statements. Rushed speech reads as anxiety no matter what you're saying.

Curious what others here have found actually shifts results — tactics or identity work first?
