HR told you that? Here's what they actually meant.
Every week I hear some version of this:
"HR pulled me aside and said they just wanted to check in."
"My manager said this conversation was off the record."
"HR told me they're on my side."
Here's the truth: HR is not your friend. They're not your enemy either. They're a risk management function for the company.
When HR says "this is just a check-in," that conversation is documented.
When your manager says "off the record," nothing is off the record.
When HR says "we're here to help," they mean they're here to help the company resolve a liability.
None of this means you're powerless. It means you need to understand the game before you play it.
Three things to do before you ever talk to HR:
Write down everything — dates, exact words, who was present. Memory degrades fast under stress. Documentation is your best asset.
Know what you're asking for. HR can't fix vague. "I'm uncomfortable" gets a form filed. "On [date], [person] said [exact words], and I believe this violates [policy]" gets traction.
Understand what they're required to do vs. what they're incentivized to do. There's often a gap — and that gap is where you operate.
If you're currently in a situation and don't know your next move, that's what Ask Before HR is for. Ask before you act.
