The 3 biggest mistakes student-athletes make with NIL deals
Most student-athletes are leaving money on the table with NIL. Here's what I keep seeing:
1. Waiting for brands to come to you.
The athletes who are cashing in aren't sitting around. They're DMing local businesses, creating content, and treating their personal brand like a startup. You don't need 100K followers — you need 1,000 engaged fans in your city.
2. No content strategy.
Posting random highlights isn't a strategy. Brands want to see consistency, personality, and engagement. Three posts a week with a mix of training content, lifestyle, and personality will outperform random viral attempts every time.
3. Signing the first deal without understanding your value.
A free pair of shoes isn't an NIL deal — it's a sponsorship for exposure. Know your engagement rate, your audience demographics, and what comparable athletes are charging. Even at the D2/D3 level, you have leverage if you know your numbers.
The athletes who figure this out early are the ones building real income streams before they even graduate. That's what we're building at AthleteIQ.
