3 Instagram mistakes killing your local business (and what to do instead)
Most local businesses are wasting time on Instagram because they're doing these three things wrong. I've helped dozens of restaurants, salons, and shops fix this — here's what I see every time.
1. Posting without a strategy
Random food pics and "Happy Monday!" posts don't drive foot traffic. Every post should answer one question: "Why should someone come in TODAY?" Feature a specific dish, a limited-time offer, or a customer story. Give people a reason to act.
2. Ignoring local hashtags
#food has 500M posts. Nobody's finding you there. Use hyper-local tags like #[yourcity]eats, #[neighborhood]food, #bestof[yourcity]. You want to show up where locals are actually browsing.
3. Not using Stories and Reels
The algorithm heavily favors short-form video. A 15-second behind-the-scenes Reel of your kitchen gets 5-10x more reach than a photo post. Stories keep you top-of-mind with existing followers. If you're not using both, you're invisible.
The businesses that fix these three things see real results — more DMs, more saves, more people walking through the door.
