Why missed calls are the most expensive leak in a service business
I've been building AI reply agents for a few months now, and the data keeps pointing at the same thing: businesses obsess over ad spend and conversion rate, but bleed the most money on missed calls.
Here's the math nobody runs: if you get 20 inbound calls a day and miss 30% of them (industry average for anyone not sitting by the phone), that's 6 missed calls daily. If even 1 in 4 of those was a real buyer, you're losing ~1.5 potential customers a day to voicemail. Over a month, that's 45 leads that called you, wanted to buy, and got nothing back.
Most of those people don't leave a voicemail. They just call the next business on Google.
The fix isn't "answer more calls" — it's closing the gap between missed call and response. A text sent within 60 seconds of a missed call gets answered at a completely different rate than a callback an hour later, because you're catching them while they're still in decision mode.
We automated this with n8n + Twilio: watch the call log, auto-text on a miss, follow up on no-shows, and drop a booking link straight into the thread. No human has to remember to do it — it just runs.
If you're running any kind of appointment-based business (contractors, clinics, salons, agencies) and you're not doing something like this yet, it's worth an afternoon to set up. The recovery math pays for itself in one saved lead.
