The 3 automations that actually save solo e-com sellers time (and the ones that don't)

Ran a one-person dropship store for a while before I started systemizing it, and most "automation" advice online is noise. Here's what actually moved the needle vs. what was a waste of setup time:

Worth automating first:

  1. Order → fulfillment handoff. The second a payment clears, the order should hit your supplier/3PL with zero clicks from you. This alone kills 60-70% of daily manual work for most single-product or dropship stores.

  2. Abandoned cart recovery. Not glamorous, but it's pure margin — you already paid for the traffic. A simple 2-email sequence recovers 5-10% of abandoned carts with basically no ongoing effort once it's built.

  3. Customer support triage. Most support tickets are the same 5 questions (where's my order, can I change my address, do you ship to X). Auto-replying to those and routing only the weird ones to yourself cuts support time by half.

Not worth automating early:

  • Full "AI store manager" tools that promise to run everything — too much setup, too fragile, break the moment your supplier changes something.

  • Automated ad creative generation before you've found a winning angle manually. Automate optimization, not discovery.

The pattern: automate the repetitive, high-volume, low-judgment tasks first. Keep judgment calls (pricing, creative, supplier negotiation) manual until you've got the boring stuff off your plate.

Building out plug-and-play versions of the fulfillment + support + cart recovery workflows above if anyone wants a shortcut — happy to share specifics in the comments.
