Why most newsletter sponsorships underprice themselves (and how to fix it)

Spent the last few months matching brands with newsletter and community owners for sponsored placements, and the same mistake shows up constantly on the publisher side: pricing off subscriber count instead of engaged reach.

A 5k-subscriber newsletter with a 45% open rate and a niche, high-intent audience (say, day traders or SaaS founders) is worth more per placement than a 50k list with a 12% open rate and no clear niche. Brands aren't paying for eyeballs, they're paying for qualified attention.

If you're a publisher, quote based on: (1) open/click rate, not list size, (2) how specific your audience is, (3) whether you've driven measurable conversions before — screenshots of past results are your best negotiating tool.

If you're a brand, the inverse is true: don't dismiss a smaller list just because the number looks unimpressive. Ask for engagement data before you pass.

Built a network (AxonAds) specifically to make these matches happen with real data on both sides instead of guesswork. Happy to answer questions on pricing placements if anyone's stuck.
