The 3 Rules I Follow When Building a Collection From Scratch
Most people think fashion is about following trends. It's not. It's about understanding why something works and building from there.
After years of designing and curating collections, I've narrowed it down to 3 rules that never fail:
1. Start with the fabric, not the silhouette.
Everyone sketches first. I touch first. The weight, the drape, the texture — that tells you what the piece wants to be. You don't force a stiff cotton into a flowy cut. Listen to the material.
2. Every collection needs one "anchor" piece.
This is the piece that defines the mood. Everything else orbits around it. If you can't point to the anchor, your collection doesn't have a story — and without a story, nobody remembers it.
3. Kill your darlings early.
That piece you're emotionally attached to but doesn't fit the collection? Cut it. The strongest collections are edited ruthlessly. 5 cohesive pieces beat 12 scattered ones every time.
I share deeper breakdowns, mood boards, and behind-the-scenes of my design process inside B.CANI Insider. If you're serious about fashion — whether you design, style, or just want to dress better — that's where the real conversations happen.
