5 things I wish every adult knew before their first ballet class
After 15 years of teaching ballet to adults, these are the misconceptions I hear the most:
1. "I'm too old to start." You're not. I've had students start at 45 and perform within a year. Ballet is about control and awareness, not being 12.
2. "I'm not flexible enough." Flexibility is a result of ballet, not a prerequisite. You don't need to touch your toes to start.
3. "I'll look silly." Every single dancer looked silly at first. The barre is there for a reason — lean on it, literally and figuratively.
4. "I need to be fit first." Ballet is the fitness. It builds strength, balance, and posture from day one. Come as you are.
5. "It's too late to be good." Define good. If good means moving with intention, carrying yourself with grace, and feeling genuinely powerful in your body — you can absolutely get there.
The hardest part is showing up the first time. Everything after that gets easier.
I teach adult beginners exclusively. If this resonates, Dance Ballet is the place.
