Why adults who start ballet at 30+ actually have an advantage
There's a myth that ballet is only for people who started as kids. After 15 years of teaching, I can tell you — adults who start later often progress faster in the areas that matter most.
Here's why:
Body awareness. Adults have lived in their bodies for decades. You already know your limits, your strengths, and how to listen to your muscles. A 6-year-old doesn't have that.
Discipline. You're choosing to be here. Nobody's parent is dropping you off. That internal motivation is worth more than any natural flexibility.
Patience with the process. Adults understand that mastery takes time. You're not in a rush to land a fouetté — you actually enjoy the fundamentals.
The biggest thing holding most adults back isn't their body. It's the belief that they "missed their window." You didn't. The window is open right now.
If you've been thinking about starting ballet, stop thinking and start moving. Your future self will thank you.
