Why most bar owners waste money on Instagram boosts (and what to do instead)
Ran ads for bars and sports bars for a while now, and the #1 mistake I see is owners hitting the "Boost Post" button on Instagram and calling it advertising.
Boosting a post targets people who already follow similar pages — it's popularity, not precision. What actually fills seats on a Tuesday:
Radius targeting, not interest targeting. Set a 3-5 mile radius around your venue and target by location + age, not "nightlife interests." Most of your realistic customers live or work within a 10-minute drive.
Dayparting. Run ads Sun-Wed only if that's your slow stretch. Don't spend the same budget on Friday when you're already full.
One clear offer per ad. "$5 wings Tuesday" outperforms "come vibe with us" every time. Bars that lead with a specific, dated offer see 2-3x better click-through than vibe-only creative.
Retarget your Wi-Fi list / email list. If you're collecting guest Wi-Fi logins, that's a warm audience most owners never touch.
Happy to answer questions if you're running your own ads and stuck on what's not converting.
