The 5 Pieces of Gear That Actually Matter for Weekend Hiking

Most hikers own way too much gear and use about 20% of it.

After years on the trail and hundreds of product tests, here's what actually moves the needle between a miserable hike and a great one:

1. Footwear that fits YOUR foot

Not the "best rated" boot. Not the one your buddy wears. The one that matches your arch, width, and ankle mobility. Most trail injuries start here.

2. A rain layer you'll actually carry

If it's too heavy or bulky to bring every time, it's useless. The best rain jacket is the one in your pack when the sky opens up, not the one at home.

3. A 20-30L pack with real hip belt support

Day packs under 20L force you to leave essentials behind. Over 30L means you're packing things you don't need. Find the sweet spot.

4. Merino wool base layer

Cotton kills. Synthetics stink. Merino regulates temp, manages moisture, and doesn't smell after 3 days. It's the single best upgrade most hikers never make.

5. A headlamp (yes, every single time)

Doesn't matter if you're planning to be back by 3pm. Trails take longer than you think. Carry a headlamp, period.

Everything else is preference. These five will keep you safe, comfortable, and coming back for more.

If you want curated picks for each of these — tested on actual trails, not Amazon review farms — that's what we do inside Basecamp Outdoors.
