I've been scoping out the Berkeley waterfront for a while now (setting up a weekend coffee spot there), and I keep finding places that even longtime locals miss.

1. The hidden bench at César Chávez Park

Walk past the main meadow toward the northwest tip. There's a bench tucked behind the hillside with a direct view of the Golden Gate. Almost always empty.

2. The Shorebird Park Nature Center path

Most people hit the main marina trail. But the path behind the nature center loops through a quieter stretch with herons, egrets, and way fewer joggers.

3. 4th Street back alleys

The shopping district is well-known, but the side streets between 4th and 5th have some great small studios and makers that don't have street-facing signage. Worth a wander.

4. The Emeryville Marina breakwater

Technically Emeryville, but a 5-min bike from Berkeley Marina. Walk the breakwater at sunset — it's one of the best unobstructed views of SF from the East Bay.

5. University Ave pier (early morning)

Before the fishermen set up, the pier at the foot of University Ave is dead quiet. Great spot to bring a coffee and just sit.
