The #1 reason adult beginners quit guitar in week 2 (and it's not lack of talent)

I've taught guitar for years, and the pattern is always the same with adult beginners: they don't quit because it's too hard. They quit because they start with the wrong first chord.

Most tutorials throw you straight into G, C, and D — three "beginner" chords that actually require the most finger independence and stretch of any open chords. You spend two weeks with buzzing strings and sore fingers, decide you're "not musical," and put the guitar in the closet.

Here's the fix: start with Em and Am. Two fingers each, close together, minimal stretch. You can strum a real chord progression (Em–Am–Em–Am) in your first 10 minutes and it actually sounds good. That early win is what keeps adults coming back — momentum beats theory every time at this stage.

A simple week-1 routine that works:

  • Day 1-2: Em and Am only, focus on clean fretting, no buzzing

  • Day 3-4: switch between them slowly with a metronome at 60bpm

  • Day 5-7: add a basic down-down-up-up-down-up strum pattern

By day 7 you'll have a real chord change and a real strum pattern down — that's more than most people have after a month of "correct" beginner chords.

If you're 25-45 and have always wanted to learn but bounced off it before, this is usually why. Fix the entry point, not your discipline.
