Most pet birds live on an all-seed diet. That's like feeding your kid nothing but crackers.
Here's what I've learned keeping parrots, cockatiels, and budgies healthy for years:
1. Seeds aren't a complete meal. They're high in fat and low in vitamins A and D. Seeds should be a treat, not the main course.
2. Fresh veggies are non-negotiable. Dark leafy greens, carrots, bell peppers — birds need these daily. Start small and be patient. Most birds take 2-3 weeks to try new foods.
3. Pellets are the backbone. A high-quality pellet diet covers 60-70% of their nutritional needs. Transition slowly by mixing with seeds.
4. Avocado, chocolate, and caffeine are toxic. Sounds obvious, but I still see bird owners offering these. Onions and garlic are also no-gos.
5. Foraging > bowl feeding. Hiding food in toys and paper makes mealtime enriching. Birds in the wild spend hours foraging — yours should too.
