Why your exhaust note isn't what you paid for (and how to actually get it)
Spent years fabricating custom exhaust systems and the #1 complaint I hear from guys who bought an off-the-shelf 'cat-back kit' is: it doesn't sound like the YouTube video.
Here's why: exhaust tone isn't just about the muffler. It's a system — pipe diameter, bends, resonator placement, tip design, and your engine's specific displacement and cam all interact. A muffler that sounds deep and mean on a 6.2L V8 can sound thin and raspy on a 5.3L, or drone like a jackhammer at highway RPM if the pipe diameter is wrong for your exhaust volume.
Three things I always tell people before they buy anything:
Pipe diameter matters more than muffler brand. Too big and you lose backpressure/torque and the tone gets hollow. Too small and you choke flow and add drone.
Resonator delete isn't free volume — it's a personality change. It cuts out mid-range frequencies, which is what makes a car sound 'raspy' vs 'deep.' If you want deep, you often want to KEEP a resonator, just a smaller/less restrictive one.
Tip diameter is cosmetic, not acoustic. Don't buy a system because the tips look big. The tip does almost nothing for sound.
If you're building a system and want it dialed to your specific vehicle instead of guessing off a kit, that's literally what we do at Blackline — hand-fabricated, tuned to your car, dyno-verified before it ships. Happy to answer questions here either way.
