Why most 'streetwear' brands die in year one (and what I'm doing differently)
I just launched Blacktop Society, a graphic hoodie brand built for the rave/underground scene — but I've watched a dozen streetwear brands come and go over the years, and they almost always die from the same 3 mistakes:
1. Too many SKUs, too fast. Founders drop a 12-piece collection week one because they think variety = credibility. It just splits your budget and your audience's attention. One hero piece, done exceptionally well, beats ten mediocre ones.
2. No community before the product. If the first time people hear from you is a checkout page, you've already lost. Build the culture first — the scene, the aesthetic, the story — then sell into it.
3. Pricing to "compete" instead of pricing to the vision. Racing to the bottom on price signals cheap. A well-made piece with real design behind it can (and should) command real dollars.
My approach: one signature hoodie, priced at $65, sold directly to a specific scene (underground music/festival heads) I actually understand — not "everyone into streetwear." Everything else — chat, updates, drops — gets built around that one product first.
Curious what other creators here have seen kill (or save) their apparel brands.
