5 things I wish I knew before renting my first coworking space

I've worked from 30+ coworking spaces, home offices, and coffee shops over the past 3 years as a freelancer. Here's what nobody tells you:

1. Day passes are a trap

At $25-40/day, you'll spend more than a monthly membership within 2 weeks. Do the math before you "try it out."

2. The vibe matters more than the amenities

A space with fast wifi and great lighting but dead energy will drain you. Visit during work hours, not during a tour.

3. Noise-canceling headphones aren't a solution

If you need silence for deep work, get a space with private phone booths or quiet zones. Open floor plans are for networking, not focus time.

4. Location = consistency

If it takes more than 20 minutes to get there, you'll stop going. Pick something close to where you already are, not where you wish you were.

5. Month-to-month always

Never sign a 6-month or annual lease for coworking unless you've already been there 3+ months and love it. Flexibility is the whole point.

I built BookBase to solve these exact problems — a community where freelancers share real workspace reviews and help each other find the right fit. No long-term commitments, just better workspaces.
