Most parents notice their kid struggling with math around 3rd-5th grade and assume it's a "just needs more practice" problem. Usually it's not. Three things we see constantly:

1. Fraction foundations get skipped, not taught.

Fractions are where a lot of kids quietly fall behind. If a student doesn't deeply get that 1/2 and 2/4 are the same amount — not just a rule to memorize — everything built on top of that (decimals, ratios, algebra later) gets shaky. Most classrooms move on before this really lands.

2. Word problems are a reading comprehension test in disguise.

Kids who can compute fine often freeze on word problems. That's rarely a math issue — it's that nobody taught them how to translate sentences into operations. It's a skill, and it can be taught directly.

3. Timed drills create math anxiety, not fluency.

Speed pressure teaches some kids to panic, not to compute. Anxious kids guess, rush, and make careless errors — which then gets misread as "not understanding" when really it's stress interfering with a brain that knows the material.
