Why 'verified' matters more than 'viral' for Black-owned businesses
Every week I talk to Black business owners who've gone viral once and made almost nothing from it. And I talk to others with 400 followers who are fully booked out three months.
The difference is never reach. It's trust signals.
A few things I've learned building a directory of Black-owned businesses:
1. Verification converts better than virality. A badge that says "this business is real, reviewed, and vetted" does more to move a stranger to book/buy than another viral clip. Attention without trust just bounces.
2. Category density beats broad reach. A steakhouse ranking #1 in "Food & Restaurants → Harlem, NY" gets higher-intent traffic than the same post blasted to 50k random followers. Niche down on where you're discoverable.
3. Reviews compound — build the habit early. Businesses that ask every single customer for a review outperform businesses with "better" products but thinner review counts. It's not close.
4. Directories + your own socials work together, not against each other. Social builds awareness. A directory listing closes the sale, because it's the place people go to confirm you're legit before they hand over money.
If you're building a Black-owned business right now: get verified somewhere before you go chase viral. Credibility is the multiplier on every other marketing dollar you spend.
