The 3 exercises every beginner should master before anything else

Most beginners walk into the gym and head straight to the machines or try to bench press on day one. Wrong move.

If you're brand new to lifting, here are the only 3 movements you need to focus on for your first 4 weeks:

1. Goblet Squat

Forget the barbell squat for now. Grab a dumbbell, hold it at your chest, and squat. This teaches you depth, bracing, and knee tracking without loading your spine. 3 sets of 10, twice a week.

2. Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

This builds your hamstrings and teaches the hip hinge — the most important movement pattern in lifting. Light weight, slow reps, feel the stretch. 3 sets of 8.

3. Push-ups (yes, really)

Before you bench, you need to know how to control your body. If you can't do 3 sets of 10 clean push-ups, you have no business loading a barbell. Master this first.

Do just these three movements for a month. You'll build a foundation that 90% of gym-goers never develop because they skipped the basics.

If you want a full beginner program with progression, nutrition guidance, and a community of people on the same path — that's exactly what Built Different is.
