3 Signs Your Ebook Topic Will Flop (Before You Write a Word)
Most first-time ebook authors pick a topic based on what they want to write about. Then they spend 2-3 months creating something nobody searches for.
Here are 3 red flags that a topic is dead on arrival โ and what to do instead.
---
๐ฉ 1. You Can't Find Anyone Asking About It
Go to Reddit, Quora, or AnswerThePublic and search your topic. If there are zero threads, zero questions, zero discussions โ that's not a "gap in the market." That's a topic nobody cares about.
The fix: Look for topics where people are actively asking questions, sharing frustrations, or requesting recommendations. Demand comes before supply.
๐ฉ 2. The Top Results Are All Free
Search your topic on Google. If page one is nothing but free blog posts, YouTube videos, and Wikipedia articles โ buyers won't pay for your ebook. They already have the answer for free.
The fix: Look for topics where free content is scattered, incomplete, or overwhelming. That's where a well-organized ebook provides real value: saving people time and decision fatigue.
๐ฉ 3. You Can't Describe the Buyer in One Sentence
"Everyone who wants to learn about productivity" is not a buyer. "A freelance designer who wants to stop undercharging" โ that's a buyer. If you can't name exactly who would pay $10-30 for your ebook, the topic is too vague.
The fix: Start with the person, not the topic. Who has a painful, specific problem? What would they search at 11pm? Write that ebook.
