3 mistakes killing your YouTube Shorts reach (and the fix)

I've helped 1,300+ people build faceless YouTube Shorts channels. The same 3 mistakes show up constantly — fix these before you touch anything else:

1. You're switching niches every 2 weeks.

The algorithm needs signal. Every niche switch resets it. Pick one niche, commit for 30 days minimum, and let the data tell you if it's working — not your gut after 3 videos.

2. Your hook is trying to be "creative" instead of clear.

The first 1.5 seconds decide everything. Viewers don't reward cleverness, they reward clarity + curiosity. State exactly what they're about to learn/see, then tease the payoff.

3. You're posting inconsistently "when inspired."

Shorts reward daily posting cadence early on — it's how the algorithm learns to trust your channel. One video every 3 days won't get you there. Even a rough daily post beats a polished weekly one for the first 60 days.

If you want the full 30-day posting framework + hook library I use with my students, it's linked in my profile. Happy to answer questions on any of this below.

Why 90% of YouTube Shorts Accounts Quit Before They Break Through (And the 4-Part Pattern That Fixes It)

Most people quit Shorts in week 2-3 because they're optimizing for the wrong thing. After watching hundreds of accounts (including our own members go from 0 to $5K-$20K/month), the accounts that break through all share the same 4-part pattern:

1. Niche consistency for 30 days minimum

The algorithm needs a consistent signal before it knows who to show you to. Switching niches every few videos resets that signal every time.

*2. Steal hook structures, not content*

Don't copy what a viral video says — copy the pattern of how it opens. The first 1.5 seconds is 80% of whether a video survives. Build a swipe file of hook structures, not hook content.

3. Batch scripts, don't write daily

Writing one script a day burns creative energy on decision fatigue. Batch 7-10 scripts in one sitting once a week — quality goes up, output goes up, and you stop the daily "what do I post today" spiral.

4. Track average view duration, not raw views

Raw views are a vanity number. Average view duration (and specifically retention past the first 3 seconds) is what the algorithm actually optimizes for. A 50K view video with 20% retention is worse for your channel long-term than a 5K view video with 70% retention.

If you're stuck on Shorts right now, it's almost never a "the algorithm hates me" problem — it's one of these four. Happy to answer questions below.
