The 3 numbers every freelancer should check weekly

Most freelancers don't go broke because they don't earn enough. They go broke because they don't know where the money goes.

After tracking finances for dozens of freelance projects, I've found that checking just 3 numbers every week keeps you in control:

1. Net cash flow (this week)

Income minus expenses. Not revenue — actual cash that hit your account vs. what left. If this number is negative 3 weeks in a row, you have a problem that more clients won't fix.

2. Outstanding invoices over 14 days

Anything past 14 days needs a follow-up. Anything past 30 needs a phone call. The average freelancer has $2,000-5,000 in unpaid invoices at any given time. That's rent money sitting in someone else's inbox.

3. Your "runway" number

Total savings divided by monthly expenses. If it's under 2 months, you need to either cut spending or raise rates. No exceptions.

I built a budget tracker specifically for freelancers juggling multiple clients — it calculates all 3 of these automatically. If you're tired of guessing where your money goes, check it out.
