5 things I always check before buying a used car from a private seller

I've inspected hundreds of used cars. Here are the 5 things most buyers miss that cost them thousands:

1. Check the oil cap for milky residue

Pop the oil cap and look underneath. Milky, creamy residue = possible head gasket failure. That's a $2,000+ repair most buyers don't catch until it's too late.

2. Look at the tires — but not for tread

Uneven tire wear tells you way more than tread depth. Inside edge wear = alignment or suspension issues. Cupping = worn shocks. Both are expensive and often hidden.

3. Check underneath for fresh undercoating

Sellers spray fresh undercoating to hide rust and frame damage. If the underside looks suspiciously new, that's a red flag. Bring a flashlight and look at the frame rails.

4. Start the car cold

Always arrive before the seller has warmed it up. Cold starts reveal everything — rough idle, blue exhaust smoke, weird noises. If the engine's already warm when you get there, ask why.

5. Pull the transmission dipstick

Dark, burnt-smelling transmission fluid means the trans is wearing out. Replacing a transmission can run $3,000-5,000. This takes 10 seconds to check.

These 5 checks take under 10 minutes and can save you from a $5,000+ mistake. But if you want real peace of mind, get a full professional inspection before you hand over the cash.

That's what we do at MechCheck — certified mechanics inspect the car so you don't have to guess.
