I've been collecting Pokémon cards for years and I see the same mistakes over and over. Here's what to avoid if you're just getting into it:

1. Buying random packs at retail hoping for hits. The pull rates are brutal. If you want specific cards, buy singles. If you want the thrill, set a pack budget and stick to it.

2. Not checking TCGPlayer/eBay sold listings before buying. That "rare" card someone's selling for $50 at a flea market? It might be a $3 card. Always check recent sold prices.

3. Ignoring card condition. A "near mint" card and a "lightly played" card can have a 50%+ price difference. Learn the grading scale before you buy or trade.

4. Chasing every new set. New sets drop constantly. Pick the ones you actually like — don't try to complete them all or you'll burn out and go broke.

5. Not protecting your cards immediately. Penny sleeves + top loaders cost almost nothing. Sleeve your pulls the second you open them. Your future self will thank you.
