When kids walk into a party, they're either engaged immediately or they scatter. And once they scatter, you're playing catch-up the entire time.

That's why every party I plan starts with a character interaction — not a game, not food, not free play. A trained performer who greets each child by name, pulls them into the story, and makes them feel like the most important person in the room.

From there, the energy flows naturally:

• Storytime and imagination games keep younger kids calm and focused

• Makeovers and spa activities give older kids something they actually care about

• The birthday child gets their "main character moment" that they'll remember for years

The decorations, the cake, the favors — those are all great. But if you nail the first 10 minutes, the rest of the party runs itself.
