Why most 1200-rated players never break 1500 (and the fix)
I've coached a lot of players stuck in the 1000-1500 range, and it's almost never a talent problem. It's one of three things:
No puzzle consistency. People play 20 games a week and solve 0 puzzles. Tactics decide almost every game below 1800 — if you're not drilling pattern recognition daily, you're leaving free rating on the table.
Opening roulette. Constantly switching openings because you lost a game with one. Pick 1-2 openings per color, play them for 3 months minimum, and actually learn the resulting middlegame plans instead of just the first 5 moves.
Zero post-game review. Playing game after game with no analysis is just repeating the same mistakes with more confidence. Even 10 minutes reviewing your losses (engine off first — find your own errors) will teach you more than 5 extra games.
Fix those three things for 30 days straight and most plateaued players jump 100-200 points. It's not glamorous, it's just reps done right.
Started a small club (Checkmate Collective) for players doing exactly this — structured lessons, daily puzzles, and live sparring to force accountability. Link in my profile if that's useful to you.
