Most beginners think chess is about memorizing openings. They spend hours learning the Sicilian Defense or the Queen's Gambit without understanding why those moves work.

The real issue? They have no sense of piece activity.

Here's what I mean: every move should either develop a piece, control the center, or create a threat. If your move doesn't do at least one of those things, it's probably a wasted tempo.

A simple test after every move: "Is this piece doing more now than it was before?"
