5 Mandarin phrases that will make native speakers respect you instantly
Most Chinese learners start with 你好 (nǐ hǎo) and 谢谢 (xiè xie). Nothing wrong with that — but here are 5 phrases that will genuinely impress native speakers:
1. 哪里哪里 (nǎ lǐ nǎ lǐ) — "Where, where?" Used as a humble response to compliments. Way more natural than just saying thanks.
2. 差不多 (chà bù duō) — "More or less." Chinese people use this ALL the time. It makes you sound like you actually live in the language.
3. 随便 (suí biàn) — "Whatever / up to you." Perfect for casual situations. Very native-sounding.
4. 加油 (jiā yóu) — Literally "add oil," but means "go for it!" Use it to cheer someone on.
5. 没事儿 (méi shìr) — "No worries / it's nothing." The Beijing 儿 (ér) at the end makes it sound incredibly natural.
The trick to Mandarin isn't memorizing 5,000 characters — it's knowing which 50 phrases make you sound real. I teach exactly this inside Chinese Mastery.
